We primarily fish the middle section of the Kenai River, renowned for its legendary trout waters and breathtaking scenery. The first 5 miles of the Kenai flowing out of Skilak Lake offer anglers some of the best trout fishing on the entire river. Nestled within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge the scenery on the section of river is nothing short of breathtaking.
Clients can anticipate a mix of fishing from the boat, drifting flies under an indicator and wading fishing the gravel bars. We use both drift boat and power boat depending on the time of year — both are perfect for fly fishing allow you to cover significant portions of water efficiently, while wading provides more of a classic trout fishing experience and the opportunity to do some spey fishing. Whether you prefer drifting or wading fishing, our trips are tailored to your preferences and experience level.

The excitement surrounding the trout opener on June 11 is palpable. Early-season trout fishing is a rewarding experience, with trout eager to chase streamers, leeches, and smolt patterns. The river isn’t crowded yet, providing a relaxed fishing environment amidst spectacular scenery.
July and August bring peak salmon runs, providing extraordinary trout fishing. Trout actively feed on salmon eggs, flesh, and smolt. Expect thrilling, fast-paced fishing with strong, acrobatic trout. Despite increased activity, serene, productive stretches of river remain plentiful.
Autumn transforms the Kenai River, bringing cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and exceptional trout fishing. Trout feed heavily on salmon eggs, making bead fishing effective. Expect vibrant, healthy trout and stunning fall foliage along the riverbanks.
Late autumn is known for the “bead bite,” with trout aggressively feeding on drifting salmon eggs. Fishing requires strategic drifting of beads to imitate natural eggs. Strikes are subtle yet powerful. Cooler conditions demand warm layers, but the rewards are memorable fishing and beautiful, peaceful surroundings.
