Embark on the ultimate freshwater catch-and-release fishing adventure for steelhead, the pinnacle of the sport. These evasive and electric fish are often referred to as "the fish of a thousand casts", but when you get a chance to dance with one, the experience is worth every cast. We strictly use fly fishing techniques for these fish and a state regulated catch and release law. Our steelhead, with an average size of 27-32" offer that that coveted "trophy" fish feeling.
Trips are available mid September-November 1
(Silvers,Trout and Steelhead) Take the next step in your fly fishing experience and explore the art of spey fishing. A traditional casting style where the fisherman creates a waterborne cast with longer rods and heavier line. This technique is employed to present the fly in a natural swimming manner, adding a thrilling feeling to getting that bite. When you catch a fish using this style of fishing, it often feels as though the rod if being ripped right out of your hands.
May is the start of the fishing season, the snow melts and fills our rivers once again. The brown and yellow banks quickly turn green and are speckled with little spring flowers. Kings are the only game in town and the mighty fish marks the beginning of our season.
June is really the kickoff for us here at Kenai River trout hunter. June 11th is the opening day on the Kenai and the day we prepare for all winter long. Rainbow trout fishing is usually anywhere from good-excellent. King salmon fishing on the Kasilof river is at its peak (5-15th) and gives you, your best opportuinity to catch one of the highly sought after fish. Sockeye salmon (Reds) really start to pick up this month as well on the Kasilof and gives everyone their first chances to start filling the freezer.
July tends to be the busiest time of year on the Kenai, but for good reason. Our second run of Kenai river sockeye start to enter the river in the thousands and can make for some epic fishing and BEST time to fill the freezer. Along with that are lots of carcasses going into the river for our trout to feed on. This is what starts to really fatten and power our fish.
August is an amazing time of the year on the Kenai. Trout fishing starts to really heat up in terms of numbers, all thanks to the mighty King spawning. This is the beginning of the bead bite. Sockeye fishing tends to be good to great for the first half of the month and the salmon focus slowly shifts to silvers through out the month. With it tending to have its first peak around the end of the month.
September is the beginning of the end for our salmon, banks become lined with dead salmon and eddys are full of salmon eggs. For trout fishermen this is THE time to be here. But the Coho salmon is the game in town for harvest and it can be a blast!
As the days get shorter and the temps drop drastically, so does the water. For the two hand spey fishermen this is our favorite time of year. It's also the peak of steelhead fishing on the Kasilof. Our Coho salmon fishing starts to really slow down

Expect to kick off your day at one of several boat launches along the river. For Salmon trips, the day typically starts no later than 4:30-7am, while trout trips vary depending on the season, most commonly starting between 7:00-8:00 am. Half day trips are available in both the morning and afternoon, with afternoon trips starting around 12:00-1:00 pm.
Upon arrival at the boat launch, you'll meet Hunter and get geared up for the day. Feel free to bring a small bag of personal items (rain gear, beverages, sun glasses, snacks etc.) Once geared up, you'll get in the boat, and start the trip either up or down river. Upon arrival at your first fishing location you'll receive a brief but comprehensive orientation on the skills, techniques and gear you'll be using for the day. Then the real fun begins.
For the rest of the day, with a rod in your hand and under Hunters guidance, you'll be working towards hooking the fish of a lifetime. If you are on a full day trip, midday you'll be taken to a nice area of the river to enjoy a relaxing lunch. Throughout the day if anyone needs bathroom breaks or some on-land time, we can accommodate to that on most trips. At the end of the day you'll return to the boat launch with your catch (or photos of it) and stories to tell to your friends.
